Education: I graduated from California State University Monterey Bay (Go Otters!) in December 2022 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Humanities and Communication with a concentration in Journalism and Media as well as a minor in Kinesiology. Currently, I am working towards my Master of Science degree in Sports, Exercise, and Performance Psychology here at MNSU Mankato.
What I like about being an SSC: There are many things that come to mind, but the main reason I love being an SSC is working with my undergraduate students and watching their leadership skills grow. I let them step up to the plate and brainstorm new ways to make Preska better. They are the ones thinking of new engagement activities, or how to decorate the desk. Being their supervisor and mentor of life is a fulfilling feeling. Secondly, I love the fact that my co-workers, supervisor, and other residential life staff are so supportive and encourage new innovative ideas to enhance the department. Coming from California, I was welcomed and included in this residential life family. I think having that social support is crucial in making a successful desk and college experience.
Favorite SSC Memory/Experience: So far, I think one of my favorite memories is working with the other SSC’s in the summer. We bonded over keys, decorating the desk for moving in, and sharing stories about our lives. One day we played corn hole or bags (whatever name you prefer) with all the residential life staff, and I got second place with my hall director Nicole. Our job can be a lot at times, but I find joy in the fact that we can all have fun together even on long workdays.
Position Balance and Academics: In this position, finding a balance between work and academics is crucial for success. My supervisor is supportive of my schedule's flexibility to reach the twenty hours. My program will work with different sport teams each week which would change some of my hours at work. Communicating with my supervisor each week and finding times for the twenty hours allowed me to find that work student balance. I encourage everyone to communicate with your staff members and supervisor whenever there could be changes in their lives.
My Professional Dream: When I am a Certified Mental Performance Consult (CMPC) after graduation, I will attend another university to receive my PHD in Sports Psychology and hopefully work in the Olympics someday.
