Financial Aid for Transfer Students

We are happy you have chosen Minnesota State University, Mankato to continue your education. There are many steps involved in getting admitted and enrolled at a new university; admissions, housing, declaring a major, and certainly financial aid. Here are some tips and tools to help you succeed with the financial aid process as a transfer student.

Submit your financial aid application to Minnesota State Mankato

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa as soon as possible. FAFSA becomes available October 1 for the next academic year. If you already completed the FAFSA for the academic year but did not send your information to Minnesota State Mankato, simply add school code 002360 to your FAFSA as a correction.

Cancel your financial aid at your previous school

If you are transferring to Minnesota State Mankato for spring semester enrollment and are attending another school fall semester, ask your school to cancel your spring semester financial aid there. Your financial aid from the school you attend fall semester does not automatically transfer to Minnesota State Mankato for spring semester; this includes any private student loans you borrowed for spring semester at your previous school.

Ensure your transcripts have been provided

Your financial aid cannot be processed until official transcripts have been received and evaluated. Request that official academic transcripts from all postsecondary institutions you attended be sent directly to the Admissions Office (including any transcripts from the military, foreign institutions, and the Post-Secondary Enrollment Option program (PSEO). If you are attending a postsecondary institution during fall semester, you must submit an official transcript showing final grades.

Check your email and student portal for requests and notifications

Updates regarding your financial aid application status and your award notification are sent by email. You have been given a school email account that you can access through MavMAIL. You can also log into the Financial Aid Portal to check on your application status. Once you have a financial aid award, you’ll be directed to review your information and respond to your awards through E-services.
