Financial Aid
Regardless of what type of program you are participating in, as long as you are registered for the proper number of credits, and have already submitted a FAFSA application, you can meet with the Minnesota State Mankato Student Financial Services about using your financial aid to help pay for your education abroad/away program costs and setting up a consortium agreement. Usually you would need to do this before departure!
You can reach them by stopping by the Campus Hub or emailing them, calling 507-389-1866 or stopping by their office, located on the main level of the Centennial Student Union (CSU).

Non-Payment of Program Fees
Please be sure to pay all your program expenses before the end of your program/you return to the U.S. and/or by the deadlines given to you by your exchange provider or program provider!
For any of the below programs, if you have any unpaid program-related expenses remaining after your program is complete, your host institution will not mail your transcript to you or Minnesota State Mankatountil your fees are paid in full (even if it's something as small as a library book fine)! This can have extreme financial aid and registration consequences for you at Minnesota State Mankato, not to mention the potential of having a bill sent to a collections agency with dire implications to your credit rating. Do not let this happen to you! Be sure to pay all your program fee expenses in a timely manner.
If you are participating in an education abroad and away program provider program, check with your education abroad program advisor as often as needed to make sure all your fees are paid. If you are participating in an exchange or Estudio Sampere program, check your Minnesota State Mankatoand host university accounts often and especially before you return to the U.S. to make sure all your fees are paid. It is much easier to pay fees that you owe abroad/away while you are still abroad/away than it is after you return to the U.S.
Estudio Sampere Programs
Costs are broken down into two sections:
- Minnesota State Mankato tuition and fees: For the Minnesota State MankatoSpanish department education abroad credits in which you will enroll, you will pay Minnesota State Mankato tuition and student fees as usual. Once you register yourself through eServices for the classes approved for you by the Chair of the Spanish department, your eServices account will be charged the appropriate tuition and student fees. If you are receiving enough financial aid to cover these fees, once your financial aid is disbursed, Minnesota State Mankato will use it to pay your eServices charges. If you are not receiving enough financial aid to cover the full tuition/fees charges, you will need to pay your tuition and student fee charges in full by the payment deadlines set for the term you are studying abroad.
- Estudio Sampere Program Fee: You will also pay a program fee for Estudio Sampere’s services. You will pay the program fee directly to Minnesota State Mankato, and Estudio Sampere will request payment from Minnesota State MankatoDepartment of World Languagesvia invoice prior to your departure. The program fee will also be charged to your eServices account. A non-refundable deposit of $400 is required approximately three weeks after the application deadline. This deposit is to be paid through your eServices account or in person at the Cashier’s Office. If you are receiving enough financial aid to cover the remainder of your program fee after the $400 deposit, Minnesota State Mankatowill use it to pay your program fee charge (once financial aid is disbursed). You will need to pay any outstanding balance by the deadlines provided.
Exchange Programs
- Passport, visa (or residence permit) and plane ticket: These are typically expenses that you will have to pay for before departing for your program, even before financial aid is disbursed for the term during which you will be on exchange. While most of these expenses (but not all) can be charged to a credit card, we advise students to be sure to have at least $3,000 available to them the semester prior to exchange participation to help cover these pre-financial aid costs. Once your financial aid is disbursed, you can use the funds to pay off credit card charges or to reimburse yourself for expenses incurred for these transactions.
- Tuition and Student Fees: Students participating in Exchange programs will pay their tuition and student fees to Minnesota State Mankatoas usual. You will see these charges in your eServices account. You will be responsible for paying the charge by the payment deadlines set for the term you are on Exchange. If you are receiving financial aid, once it is disbursed it will be applied to your charges as usual and any leftover funds will be sent to your bank account by direct deposit (as long as you have direct deposit activated through your eServices account). You can then use any remaining funds as you need to help cover your living and educational expenses while abroad/away.
- Required International Insurance: You will be enrolled in international insurance with the Minnesota State Mankato’s preferred insurance provider, GeoBlue (as of June 2020), and the cost of this insurance will also be billed to your eServices.
- Housing, utilities, food, books and supplies, local transportation, other miscellaneous expenses: You will pay your housing and utility expenses on-site in your host country. You will not pay these expenses through Minnesota State Mankato. You will also pay for class materials, local transportation, food, etc. on a daily/weekly/monthly basis while you are in your host country, just like you do in Mankato. To view cost estimates for these expenses, please view the "Budget Sheet" line on your program's "Brochure" page. You can find the Brochure Page by searching for your program in our "Program Search" section. Be sure to pay close attention to emails and other correspondence and information provided to you by your Exchange program for all of these details.
Faculty-Led Programs
- Passport, Visa and Inoculation/Vaccination Fees: These are typically expenses that you will have to pay for before departing for your program, possibly before financial aid is disbursed for the term during which your program runs. While most of these expenses (but not all) can be charged to a credit card, we advise students to be sure to have at least $1,000 available to them at least six months prior to the program departure date to help cover these expenses. Once your financial aid is disbursed, you can use your financial aid to pay off credit card charges or to reimburse yourself for expenses incurred for these transactions.
- Minnesota State Mankato Tuition and Student Fees: All faculty-led programs require registration in the Minnesota State Mankatoclass designated for the program. Afteryou register for the appropriate class, your eServices account will be billed for the Minnesota State Mankato tuition and students fees as usual. You will be responsible for paying the charges by the payment deadlines set for the term you are studying abroad. If you are receiving financial aid, once it is disbursed it will be applied to your charges as usual and any leftover funds will be sent to your bank account by direct deposit (as long as you have direct deposit activated through your eServices account).
- Required International Insurance: You will be enrolled in international insurance with the Minnesota State Mankato’s preferred insurance provider, GeoBlue (as of June 2020), and the cost of this insurance will be billed to your eServices.
- Program Fee: Each faculty-led program has its own designated program fee that covers all or most expenses related to your overseas program. After completing your online application through the Center for Global Engagement application site (Terra Dotta) which includes receiving the faculty leader’s and Center for Global Engagement’s approval, at the appropriate time prior to your departure, the program fee will be charged to your eServices account. The professor leading the program can provide you with additional payment deadline instructions and information.
- Miscellaneous Expenses: Please verify with the professor leading your program what expenses are not covered by the program fee and how much you additional money you should have on hand to cover these expenses.
NSE: National Student Exchange
- Application fee, housing deposit, plane ticket/gas, and other miscellaneous host university fees: These are typically expenses that you will have to pay for before the start of your program well before financial aid is disbursed for the term during which you will be on Exchange. While most of these expenses (but not all) can be charged to a credit card, we advise students to be sure to have at least $2,000 available to them the semester prior to Exchange participation to help cover these pre-financial aid costs. Once your financial aid is disbursed, you can use the funds to pay off credit card charges or to reimburse yourself for expenses incurred for these transactions.
- Tuition and Student Fees: Students participating in NSE will pay their tuition and student fees to Minnesota State Mankato as usual. This will cover your tuition and student fees at your host university. Your eServices account will be charged your usual banded tuition and student fees. You will be responsible for paying the charge by the payment deadlines set for the term you are on Exchange. If you are receiving financial aid, it will be applied to your charges as usual and any leftover funds will be sent to your bank account by direct deposit (as long as you have direct deposit activated through your eServices account) once it is disbursed.
- Housing, utilities, food, books and supplies, local transportation, other miscellaneous expenses: You will pay your housing and utility expenses to the manager of your housing unit in the city where you are on NSE Exchange. You will not pay these expenses through Minnesota State Mankato. You will also pay for class materials, local transportation, food, etc. on a daily/weekly/monthly basis while you are in your host city. You should be able to access cost estimate information through your host university's website.
Education Abroad and Away Program Providers
- Minnesota State Mankato Fees: Except for our office's $30 application fee (which will be charged to your eServices account), you will pay your education abroad and away company program fee directly to the education abroad company.
- Pre-Departure Expenses: Most education abroad and away companies require anywhere between a $100-350 deposit payment at the time you start your application on their website. They may also require a "good faith payment" in the amount of $1,000-3,000 a few months prior to the final program fee payment deadline. You might also have to pay a housing deposit in advance of between $200-750. Other upfront costs include ordering your passport, possible visa fees, possible inoculations/vaccinations, plane ticket, etc. These are all expenses you will have to pay prior to receiving your financial aid for the term you are abroad. While most of these expenses (but not all) can be charged to a credit card, we advise students to be sure to do their cost estimate research in advance so they know how much money they need to have available to them the semester prior to studying abroad to help cover these pre-financial aid costs. Your education abroad and away program provider can provide you with all the cost estimate information you need, as well as their various payment deadlines. A cost estimate will be provided by Center for Global Engagement as well. If you do not find this information on the company's website, you can call the company's U.S. office. The good news is, once your financial aid is disbursed, you can use the funds to pay off credit card charges incurred for these expenses.
- Sending Financial Aid to an Education Abroad and Away Company: If you are receiving financial aid through Minnesota State University, you will still be able to use your aid to pay your education abroad company program fee, but it will be your responsibility to send your financial aid funds to your education abroad and away company once your aid is deposited into your bank account (as long as you have direct deposit activated through your eServices account). Please work the the Minnesota State Mankato Student Financial Services and your program provider closely in setting up a consortium agreement. This agreement is what will release your financial aid to you, so that you can pay your program provide.
- Final Payment Deadlines: If you are not receiving enough financial aid to cover your full education abroad and away company expenses, you will be required to pay the remaining balance by the education abroad company's payment deadline.
