Kenneth Reid, Director, African American Affairs

Kenneth Reid is the Director of African American Affairs at Minnesota State University Mankato (MSU, Mankato). Mr. Reid holds a Bachelor of Science in Communications with an emphasis in Advertising and Public Relations from Grand Valley State University (GVSU) and, a Master of Arts in Postsecondary Education: Student Affairs from the University of Northern Iowa (UNI). Kenneth has committed himself to enhancing multicultural education efforts, developing student support services, advocating against social injustice, and promoting an inclusive campus environment. His work includes co-organizing the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) ‘We Can Do Better’ campaign in response to the Michael Brown shooting and researching students’ perceptions of ethnic and multicultural centers. Kenneth also manages a Black Male Initiative called, “Black Excellence in YOU (BE YOU)” that he created to close the Opportunity Gap for Black males in higher education. The program is in its third year since its inception and ensures the academic success and social integration of first-year, Black men at MSU, Mankato.

As a higher education leader, Mr. Reid has a proven record of advocating for educational equity and social justice to radically transform outcomes for students and campus communities. In Kenneth's current role as the Director of African American & Multicultural Affairs at MSU, Mankato, he helps to eliminate barriers to student success, develop programs that enhance students' experiences, as well as evaluate policies or procedures that limit access. As his practical experiences exhibit, Kenneth remains committed to his personal goal of promoting student success. Through effective communication, intentional collaborative efforts, and buy-in from key stakeholders, Kenneth has effectively supported students and helped them become global ambassadors who are ready to compete in today’s diverse economy.

Mr. Reid also serves as a Mankato Area Public School Board (MAPS-ISD 77) Vice-Chair. He has instituted an ambitious student-centered agenda to improve the quality of services and education in MAPS-ISD 77. Kenneth actively works to leverage his advocacy and leadership to expand academic excellence, work to increase progress on closing the Achievement Gap for low income and racial and ethnically diverse students, and strengthen teacher retention through robust curricular and professional supportive services and policies. Kenneth has a strong belief that "our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter" (Dr. King, 1965)!
