Why I want to be a Maverick Firsts Advocate
I was a first-generation college student, and although my older sister helped me navigate the path some, neither of my parents understood my journey and all the steps, requirements, and unwritten rules that I had to figure out on my own. In undergrad, I viewed my time in college like another box to check. I was so focused on getting strong grades and the pressure to graduate in the least amount of time, that I missed out on so many opportunities. I was too scared to step out of my comfort zone and steer away from the plan I thought I needed to follow. In talking with college students, I know that many are not sure why they are here, what strengths they possess and how to uncover these answers by engaging in opportunities. I enjoy talking with students and hope I can play a small part in helping them find their place.
Other information about me
I have struggled with anxiety my entire life and understand how the physical responses, irrational thoughts, feelings of danger, restlessness and dread can be paralyzing. If this is something you can relate to, I am here to listen, offer support, and share strategies with one another. You are not alone, and this does not mean you cannot succeed here.
Other interests of mine include a love for all things true crime. If you want to talk serial killers -I’m your gal! 😉 I am an unashamed ‘Swiftie’ and will passionately defend her songwriting to anyone. I also like to cook, try out new recipes, listen to podcasts (My Favorite Murder, Pod Save America, The Daily, Fresh Air, Lovett or Leave it) and have recently picked up cross-stitching.
