Why I want to be a Maverick Firsts Advocate
I was a first-generation college student…sort of. I had two older brothers who went to college before me, so I had the benefit of their experience and support. I grew up visiting them in college, and learning second-hand how a lot of things worked. But, I realize not everyone has that opportunity. The transition from High-school, a job, or the military to college is not an easy one. No student brings the full set of “classically expected” skills to college, but each student has a unique skillset that can be utilized to succeed. Hopefully, we at Maverick Firsts can help you notice and use the skills you bring, develop the skills that could use some work, and act as a sounding board for your concerns so that we can help you help yourself to a great college experience.
Other items of interest
In my tenure at MSU Mankato, I have collaborated with several multinational corporations in product development and product failure analysis. Every once in a while, I am asked to suggest students for internships.
Our Department hosts the ACS Chemistry Club, the ASBMB Biochemistry Club, and the Pre-Pharmacy Club. Get involved! You’d be surprised how extracurricular club membership can generate benefits in friendship, direction, and collaboration.
