The Writing Center takes the following position:

Part of the MSU Writing Center’s mission is to help students grow in their development as confident, independent writers. Writing consultations serve to help students think about their writing style, their creative processes, their assignment criteria, and areas for revision.  While writing center tutors are not plagiarism or AI detectors, they are trained to have conversations with students about plagiarism, AI, and critical/evaluative thinking skills.  Tutors are trained to encourage and help facilitate academic integrity, including the following of instructor guidelines.  Tutors are also encouraged to learn about AI as it continues to evolve.  In order to best partner with MSU faculty, the Writing Center highly encourages instructors to make their AI usage guidelines transparent for students so that tutors can reference these AI guidelines with students during writing consultations.
