International Sport Management (MS)

Summary

Our one-of-a-kind master’s in International Sport Management is uniquely designed to utilize the strengths of three different universities in Minnesota, The Netherlands, and Ireland to develop competitive sport business leaders through a comprehensive global education. In one calendar year students study in three different countries to complete this distinct program incorporating both theory and its application through tackling real-world issues with actual sport business partners within and outside of the classroom. Each university will focus on their strengths and teach the following: 

  • Minnesota State University, Mankato - international sport management, advanced sport marketing, and international sport business ethics and diversity
  • HAN University of Applied Sciences (The Netherlands) - sport digital marketing analytics, international sport economics and finance, and techniques of research.
  • National University of Ireland, Galway - international sport law and governance, sport business innovation and sustainability, and international sport media and communication.

The program focuses on current trends, problem-solving, and applying course concepts to real sport business situation across the globe and through various cultures. Students will meet with sport business executives and tour facilities in the US and across Europe. The curriculum follows the guidelines set by COSMA for the preparation of global sport business leaders and culminates with an international field experience and project.

Common Core

The purposes of this course are to expand students¿ awareness of global sport management principles and obtain firsthand experience in international sport through studying abroad. The course will address ethics, marketing, event management, finance, and challenges/issues in international sport management.

Prerequisites: none

The concepts of innovation and sustainable development, which includes social, economic and environmental aspects, is problematized in a contemporary sport business context.

International Sport Business Ethics and Diversity examines business ethics, culture, society, critical issues and controversies to prepare sport business leaders for a dynamic and diverse industry.

This course covers digital marketing analytics in international sport business.

Prerequisites: none

This course covers international sport finance, economics and economic impact analysis.

Prerequisites: none

This course covers the main legal and governance issues facing the world of international sport business today.

Prerequisites: none

Advanced study of the principles of marketing of or through sport including marketing analysis, development of a marketing management plan, promotion, place, price, public relations, product as applied to sport and the sport industry.

This course covers media and communications in the world of international sport business.

Research/Methods Course(s)

Introductory course to the research processes involved in the fields of physical education, exercise science, and human performance. Coverage of various types of research designs and writing of the research paper is a major intent of this course.

This course is designed to provide a rigorous, comprehensive hands-on learning experience for students majoring in Sport Management. This more closely supervised field experience requires a rigorous time and energy commitment from students.

Supervised field experience related to the student's academic specialization associated with the disciplines of human performance. Disciplines include the following: College Teaching, Sport Management, Public School Teaching, D/APE, Intramural-Recreational Sports Management, Elementary Physical Education, Exercise Physiology, and Sport Psychology.

Policies

  • Admission to the International Sport Management Master’s program is competitive and enrollment is limited.
  • Students must have a valid passport to participate in coursework for the program.
  • Applications submitted by March 1st will have priority.
  • Applicants must submit the following materials to graduate admissions:
    1. Official transcript(s) listing undergraduate or graduate degree(s).
    2. Three letters of recommendation.
    3. Statement of interest (2-3 page essay describing your career goals, reasons for pursuing this International Sport Management Master's degree, and how you plan to use the graduate degree. The statement of interest will serve as your writing sample).
    4. A 1-2 page statement indicating your commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion that describes your values related to diversity, equity and inclusion, your experiences working with diverse populations, and your commitment and willingness to learning more about diversity, equity, and inclusion.
    5. A statement confirming you are aware this program requires coursework in three different countries and that are committed to working with people from different cultures and backgrounds.
