Educational Leadership

This seminar course provides an avenue for the exploration and investigation of special study topics in educational leadership.

This course will provide doctoral students with knowledge and skills in organizational theory and analysis. Learners will demonstrate the ability to apply the tenets of Critical Race Theory to systems and organizations. Learners will acquire an understanding of the complexity of organizations, structural framework, impact of human resources, political arena, and practices in improving leadership. Learners will assess their leadership strengths in relation to implementing change in an organization.

This course is a required course for the doctorate in Educational Leadership. The seminar is offered so students can acquire the knowledge of how public policy is developed and the influences exerted on public policy.

This course provides an introduction to and opportunities for producing scholarly writing of publication quality. It offers ample opportunities for practicing formatting, grammar, and APA citation skills needed for peer-reviewed theoretical papers and primary research reports including dissertations.

This course offers investigations into traditional and exploratory genres of qualitative research and provides the critical analysis tools necessary for doing so. Included will be aspects unique to qualitative design used for sampling, instrumentation, data collection and analysis, and report formats.

The course provides an overview of quantitative research methods, clarifies the role of quantitative methods in the research process, and provides experiences for application of quantitative methods.

This course offers focused investigations into a specific genre or methodology of research. Class members will work individually or in small learning groups in completing individually-constructed learning contracts to gain in-depth knowledge and skills in particular genre or methodology.

The doctoral dissertation course is designed to guide the student through preparation and defense of the dissertation proposal, assist the student in the dissertation research and writing process and ensure focus and consistency in preparation and defense of the final product.

Eductnl Studies: K-12 and Secondary Pgrms

Course gives students new to this country and to the U.S. higher education a broad overview of the U.S. educational system and provides a forum for discussion and comparison of customs and beliefs as they affect relationships among students and professors. Prereq: International student

Prerequisites:

In order to explore careers in education, students will have the opportunity to identify and investigate issues of social justice in education and build skills of an educator through experiential learning in schools. Student will engage in a hands-on, interactive exploration and investigation into the complex roles of race, culture, and identity in education.

This course will engage students in an indepth exploration of how the challenges and demands imposed by an ever evolving diverse, legalistic, politically minded, and technologically driven society impact public education in America today. Teacher candidates will develop skills to access information and integrate technology to improve learning for PK-12 students. Teacher candidates research, select, and evaluate information about diverse populations to design classroom applications using a wide variety of instructional technology.

Study of interpersonal skills, motivation, and group skills. Applied to educational settings. There will be 30 hours of field experience outside of class (collaborative for KSP 222 and 220W). Meets State of Minnesota human relations requirement for teacher licensure.

Teacher candidates develop understanding of cognitive, language, personal and social development for implications on teaching in the inclusive classroom. Dispositions and skills will be developed for recognizing and accommodating exceptionality in student learning.

Designed for non-teacher education students, this is a general education course considering human development from a life span perspective.

The course is designed to guide K-12 and 5-12 teacher candidates through the design, implementation, and assessment of a standards-based curriculum. Candidates will analyze standards, create assessments, and design and delivery of instruction in a field-site.

Course content addresses formal and informal, standardized evaluation of learner achievement in the classroom and programmatic evaluation. Assigned projects will accommodate the student's present/future professional career track.

Teacher candidates will further develop processes for creating and sustaining a classroom learning environment that enables success for all learners, including interacting with diverse families, school colleagues, and representatives from community agencies to support student engagement and learning. Co-reqs: KSP 440 & KSP 442

Teacher candidates will develop skills in differentiated instruction, reading and content-based literacy in inclusive classrooms. Teacher candidates will integrate prior knowledge of diverse learners, developmental models of learning, and curriculum and instruction into a comprehensive understanding of teaching. Co-reqs: KSP 440 & KSP 442

Meets State of Minnesota human relations requirement for teacher licensure. Graduate students will have additional course requirements.

Content focus is on professional rights, responsibilities, and development; student rights and responsibilities; and legal issues regarding data privacy and confidentiality. Skills of professional development, inquiry, reflection, coaching, and collaboration will be developed, practiced, and monitored.
