Minnesota State Mankato’s Student Events Team Sponsoring Snow Sculpture Build Feb. 11-13
Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Student Events Team is sponsoring a snow sculpture build by the Snowkitects artist team on the Performing Arts Center lawn (along Ellis and Maywood avenues) beginning Friday, Feb. 11 through Sunday, Feb. 13, weather permitting.
The completed snow sculpture build is expected to be about 512 cubic feet in size with special LED color lighting for night viewing.
Construction hours of the sculpture are expected to be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with work to be completed Sunday if necessary. The sculpture will be open for free public viewing days and evenings. It is tentatively scheduled to remain on the Performing Arts Center lawn until Friday, Feb. 25.
According to the artists’ description of the piece, the completed sculpture will include three pillars that are “a nod to the pillars of sustainability, lending itself to the idea of global togetherness with framing words tying into a common theme. The arched shapes create a sphere through implied lines, featuring a bull’s bust in the center. As one makes their way through the piece, they feel enclosed by the pillars while still connected to the environment around them. To college students, the campus may seem like the center of the universe, however it is still connected to a much larger world.”
The Snowkitects include artists Kyle Slivnik and David Prom, who completed their first snow sculpture in 2009 at the Festival du Voyageur in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Since that initial project, the Snowkitects have sculpted in North Dakota, Minnesota, Illinois and Canada. More information is available on the Snowkitects Facebook page.
