Minnesota State Mankato Administrator Anne Dahlman Named Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Northern Michigan University
Mankato, Minn. – Anne Dahlman, Minnesota State University, Mankato’s interim associate provost and interim dean of global education, has been named provost and vice president of academic affairs at Northern Michigan University, located in Marquette, Michigan, effective April 1.
Dahlman (pictured at right) has spent the past 17 years at Minnesota State Mankato, advancing through the faculty ranks to full professor and serving in various campus leadership positions. She has served as the University’s interim dean of global education since 2019, and she was named interim associate provost for academic affairs in 2021. She served as Honors Program director (2015-2018) and as a faculty member in the College of Education (2006-2014).
Minnesota State Mankato Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs David Hood congratulated Dahlman on her new position and said he was appreciative of her 17 years of service to Minnesota State Mankato.
“Working with Anne for the past 16 months has been one of the many highlights in my time as provost,” said Hood. “Anne is committed to the ideals of the regional comprehensive university and is well prepared to provide competent, courageous and compassionate leadership as she embarks upon her new role at Northern Michigan University.”
As Minnesota State Mankato’s interim associate provost and leader of the provost’s budget administrative team, Dahlman was responsible for strategic resource management, including a budget of $112 million and oversight of personnel requests, space, academic schedules and instructional equipment. She also led strategic planning efforts for Academic Affairs, including the creation of the University’s comprehensive academic plan.
As Minnesota State Mankato’s interim dean of global education, Dahlman led Minnesota State Mankato to achieve a No. 8 national ranking in international student enrollment among master’s institutions (1,711 students in fall 2022). Through the creation of 20 new international partnership agreements, Dahlman expanded Fulbright scholar opportunities, faculty-led education abroad experiences and collaborative teaching and research.
Prior to joining Minnesota State Mankato, Dahlman served at the University of Minnesota as a lecturer (2006) and student teaching supervisor (2002-2006) in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction: Second Languages. Dahlman has also served as a lecturer or instructor at a number of other institutions during a 27-year career in higher education.
Dahlman earned a doctorate degree from the University of Minnesota in Curriculum and Instruction: Second Languages and Cultures Education. She holds master’s degrees in teaching English as a second language (TESL) and German from Colorado State University and a master’s degree in Swedish/German education from the University of Joensuu in Finland.
Dahlman is the third Minnesota State Mankato administrator in the past four years to be named provost at another University. Matt Cecil was appointed provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Northern Kentucky University in 2021, and Robert (Bobby) P. Fleischman was appointed provost and vice president for academic affairs at Ferris State University in 2020.
Minnesota State Mankato, a comprehensive university with 14,635 students, is part of the Minnesota State system, which includes 26 colleges and seven universities.
