Minnesota State Mankato’s Clinical Sciences Building Receives Merit Award from AIA Minneapolis
Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Clinical Sciences Building was one of six buildings recently recognized with a Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects Minneapolis.
According to an AIA Minneapolis press release, the six awards recognized “projects designed by AIA Minneapolis architects that tell a story of excellence beyond design; emphasize public interest design; and embrace the varied forces that shape a building.”
“We’re very proud of our Clinical Sciences Building and honored to receive this award,” said Richard Davenport, president of Minnesota State Mankato. “We appreciate the financial support of the state legislature for constructing the building, as well as the expertise and contributions of all those who contributed to the project. It is one of the finest buildings of its kind in our state. Not only does the Minnesota State Mankato Clinical Sciences Building serve as a first-class building for our students, it also provides health and dental services to the public all across our region. We thank AIA Minneapolis for this award recognition.”

The AIA Minneapolis Merit Award encompasses the views of business professionals, real estate developers, community advocates, academic leaders, as well as architects, according to the press release.
Minnesota State Mankato’s Clinical Sciences Building is described as the “new collaborative health hub that fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and enables student engagement with state-of-the-art academic and clinical experiences.”
The Clinical Sciences Building houses Minnesota State Mankato’s Maverick Family Nursing Simulation Center (part of the School of Nursing) and departments of Dental Hygiene and Speech, Hearing and Rehabilitation Services that are part of the University’s College of Allied Health and Nursing.
The Clinical Sciences Building is a 79,131 square-foot, three-story facility that opened for classes in January 2017. The $28.883 million total project budget for the building included a $2,065,000 capital bond for design in 2012 and the $25,818,000 capital bond for construction in 2014 that former Governor Mark Dayton signed into law and $1 million in campus funds to add a basement. A ceremonial groundbreaking was held Sept. 26, 2014, and the University occupied the building in December 2016.
Minnesota State Mankato, a comprehensive university with 14,604 students, is part of the Minnesota State system, which includes 30 colleges and seven universities.
